    Olympian Varinder Singh 5-A side women's hockey tournament- Khalsa Academy Amritsar captured the title

  • Jalandhar February 18 ( ) Khalsa Academy Amritsar won the title of Olympian Varinder Singh 5-A side women's hockey tournament by defeating Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women Jalandhar by a margin of 10-9 after a tight contest. In the tournament held at Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women Jalandhar hockey ground, Khalsa School Amritsar won the third place by defeating PIS Mohali by a margin of 8-6 after a tough competition. Olympian Varinder Singh's wife Manjit Kaur, Alfa Hockey Director Jatin Mahajan and Nitin Mahajan distributed prizes to the winning teams. The winning team was awarded with Alfa hockey sticks and a winner's trophy, the runner-up team was awarded with Jonex hockey sticks and a runner-up trophy and the third-placed team was awarded with a trophy and track suits. Harleen Kaur of Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women, Jalandhar was declared the best player of the tournament, she was awarded a trophy and Rs 5100 in cash, Jashnpreet Kaur, the goalkeeper of the same college, was awarded the best goalkeeper, she was also awarded with Rs 5100 and Khalsa Academy Amritsar. Meenakshi was also awarded with Rs 5100 as the best defender. The family of Olympian Varinder Singh was specially honored by the organizing committee. On this occasion, a sapling was planted at the hockey ground by Waqt A Aagaaz NGO in memory of Olympian Varinder Singh from his wife. In the final match, both the teams showed their best game. Both the teams were tied at 5-5 at half time. Before the final match, an exhibition match was held for the women's Masters teams in which Masters Jalandhar defeated Masters Canada by a margin of 12-7.
